About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a visa if I am going to Hong Kong, Tokyo and Shanghai. Each for three days

I am planning a trip from Florida to Hong Kong, Tokyo and Shanghai in the spring 2017. I know I dont need an entry permit for Hong Kong and Tokyo but what about for Shanghai? I have read the 144 hour rule and am trying to figure out if I need to plan my stops in a specific order so the 144 hour rule applies. Can I go to all three and then go back to Shanghai to fly home if I dont leave the airport? I have heard the visa requirements are changing again but no one can give me an answer. Thanks

Sharon, may I know your detailed travel route? If you fly like this: HK-Tokyo-Shanghai-US, and stay in Shanghai for not more than 144 hours, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai.

I do not have my travel route yet. Does it make a difference which stop is Shanghai? Can I fly into Shanghai first, then go to Hong Kong and/or Tokyo and go back to Shanghai to fly back to the US. My second stop in Shanghai would be just at the airport to fly back to the US

Sharon, if you travel like this: US-Shanghai-HK/Tokyo-Shanghai-US, and your layover time in Shanghai is less than 144 hours respectively, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit there for both transits. You just need to make sure that after you stop in Shanghai, you should fly to a third country or region rather than the last country or region you fly from.
