usa to beijing to laos?

Question

We are flying to Laos from the United States overnight layover in Beijing (PEK).  Outgoing flight to Laos also departs from Beijing (PEK).  We'll have valid passports and confirmed flights to Laos, but we will not have Laos visas yet as we obtain these upon arrival in Laos.  Can we use the 72 Hour Free transit and stay the night in a Beijing city hotel?  Thanks!
