About:Xi'an Transportation

Do I need to buy the transportation card in Xi'an? Can I buy a ticket when i board the subway?

Will it be more expensive to buy ticket at the station than owning a transportation card?

No, you don't need to purchase the local transportation card. And you can also buy the metro ticket when you arriving at the station.
In addition, the card holders can enjoy 10 percent discount when taking the metro. Thus the prices don't vary wildly. Don't worry.
