Shanghai has newly carried out 144-hour free transit policy, which actually is an expansion for the previous 72-hour free transit policy. You can google it.

So any destination (country) that is a third destination is ok then? Wasn't sure if it had to be in a nearby region?

And what do I need to do in advance? Let the airline know or can I just enter the separate queue for transit visa? Can the hotel register me so I don't have to go to a police station?

Lina, you need to tell the airline and that's the only thing you need to do in advance. The hotel can register for you. After checking in, you can confirm this with the inquiry desk.

Thank you so much for this- it has really helped me out. I will just carry with me the onward flight confirmation showing my next destinations with a valid E-ticket number.
