I am an American living in Thailand with a visa.  Am I eligible for the 144hr free transit if I am traveling from thailand to shanghai and back to thailand?

Kristen, no, you cannot enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai if you travel like that. You need to apply for a tourist L type for your journey.
