Apply for L visa in China after expiry of X2 type?

I am in Wuhu, Anhui Province, with an X2 type. After the expiration of my X2 type I would like to continue travelling China with an L type. I have been told that for me to apply, I need to do so in Hong Kong. However, I have also been told that I can apply at the Public Security Bureau. Firstly, is this true? Secondly, if so, what process do I need to follow to make an application to the PSB, and where is the closest PSB?

Brad, as far as I know, you can do it in mainland PRC directly. You can apply for a tourist L type 7 days earlier before the X type expires.
You should first prepare the relevant materials including your passport, the application form, a passport-style photo, valid registration form of temporary residence, the return ticket and accommodation arrangement. Afterwards, submit the application to the PSB to apply for it.
The address of exit and entry administration of the local PSB in Wuhu: 1st floor of citizen service center (no. 88 Ruixiang Road in Jiujiang District).

Thanks Alfred, that was a lot of help! Approximately, how long does the application take? Less than one day or a few days? And is it possible to apply more than 7 days earlier, say 14 days?
