Susan, if you have never has Chinese passport, you can apply for Chinese visa directly. May I know which type you will apply for? If you apply for tourist L type, you can first prepare the required documents containing your passport and copy f its data page, the completed application form affixed with a passport-style photo, and proof of accommodation and transportation arrangement.
After, submit the application to the consulate general of PRC to apply for it.

Thanks for your reply. We want to visit our family in China and will return to USA within 2 months. I have an invitation letter. Please let me know if there are any other documents I need to bring besides the application form, photo, copy of my passport, and the invitation letter. Thanks.

So you mean you want to apply for a Q type or S type? May I know which passport your parents hold? If they hold Chinese passport, you can apply for Q type; but if they hold US passport and have Chinese residence permit, you should apply for S type. If so, the invitation letter is necessary. Besides what you mentioned above, you also need to provide relationship certificate and your parents’ Chinese ID card or residence permit.
