About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I want to travel to Shanghai and dont have a third country

I live in Dubai and have British nationality. I want to travel to my company's rep office in Shanghai and return to Dubai. I expect to stay in the country for 4 nights. Would I be eligible for this visa?

Libby, if you travel like that, you are not eligible for the 144 hour free transit.
But if you can make a stop in HK or Macau before you come to Shanghai, after staying in Shanghai for 4 nights, you fly to Dubai, you will be able to enjoy the free transit in Shanghai.
Otherwise, a business M type or other type will be needed.

Hi Bruce, this is really useful. How long would I have to transit in HK or Macau? Also, this is technically a work visit - does this new exemption apply for business travellers?

There is no specific requirement for how long you should transit in HK or Macau. It can be few hours or a day as long as you have a stopover there before going to Shanghai. The 144 hour free transit is also applicable to business travelers. Don’t worry and nice trip!
