visa info for trip to Beijing, Xian and Hong Kong

We are planning a 3 night stay in Beijing and 2 nights in Xian. We will also spend 3 nights in Hong Kong but I believe I don't need an entry permit for this stay. Do I apply for multiple entry permit for the visits in Xian and Beijing? Thanks in advance.

Fran, may I know about your detailed travel itinerary? Actually, if you fly to Beijing from USA and then fly to HK, after 3-night in HK, you will fly to Xian, and then fly back to USA, no entry permit is needed because you can enjoy free transit in Beijing and Xian.
Otherwise, you may need to apply for a tourist L type to travel to Beijing and Xian. If you just enter once, a single entry L type is enough.
