About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US Passport, 77 hours transit in Shanghai, visa required?

Hello, I will be traveling from the USA-Tokyo,Japan-Shanghai, China (77hrs here)- back to the USA. Do I need a visa or does the new 144-transit visa apply now, which means I do not need a Visa any more?

If so, you are eligible for the free transit in Shanghai and no entry permit is needed anymore.
