About:China Visa Application in USA

Trying to visit friends in China in August.

If my state of residence is in Maine, but I currently live in Chicago, can I apply for the VISA in Chicago? I have a passport but have not applied for a VISA before. Do I need plane tickets and itinerary in advance before I apply? I'm assuming I will be applying for the tourist L type?

Jason, in principle, you should apply for it at the consulate general of PRC in New York. But if you have residence card in Chicago, you can possibly apply for it from there.
If you have friend in PRC, you can ask him or her to issue an invitation letter to you. In this case, you don’t need to provide the air tickets and itinerary.
