About:Dress Code in China

Hi! I will be visiting Hong Kong and Shanghai in October.

And I am curious about what I should plan on packing for clothes and shoes, specifically what will be appropriate for both the weather and the culture? Are tank tops, shorts, and flip flops acceptable if it's warmer? Or would short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts, jeans, and shoes like Toms be a better option? I don't want to be too hot or cold, but I also don't want to offend people over there by wearing something that is considered inappropriate or revealing.

The clothes you mentioned above can all be taken into CN. You will find local people dressing them. It won't be a problem. You'd better pack both cool clothes and long-sleeve shirts. The weather in HK may be a little bit hot with the temperature of 75~85F, while Shanghai might be cooler of 60~75F.
Generally speaking, there won't be a dressing limitation when you enter most of the scenic areas. But you'd better not wear tank tops, shorts, or flip flops to museums or churches.
