About:Visa Policy of China

Two passports

My son is two years old and has two passports. Shortly my wife will get her spouse visa.

Is it possible to travel from mainland PRC to Hong Kong, or another transit destination, exiting PRC with his Chinese one and then travel onwards with his UK one?

I've heard different stories and if need be I'll need to renounce his Chinese citizenship

Alex, I’m afraid not. Chinese doesn’t accept dual nationality, so he needs to renounce either Chinese citizenship or UK citizenship.
