Work Permit Renewal in China

Hello,
I'm Aaron, from the USA and I currently hold a non-teaching work permit through Shanghai, which expires June 24. I just signed a new contract with an agency where I'll be working in a Hangzhou public school in September, 2016. He told me that once I give him the release letter and other necessary documents to process, he needs to apply for a Foreign Expert Certificate since it's a public school. Is it possible to apply and approve within China or will I need to go to Hong Kong?

Hi Arron! It's possible to get a Foreign Expert Certificate and a new work visa without leaving China or going to HK. However, I was wondering will you have a suitable visa to make your stay legal during the gap of two jobs.

Hello Jenice,
The recruiter agency that deals primarily with China public schools (Haida) has agreed to process my FEC before my visa expires on June 24. I'm awaiting the release letter and reference letter from my old company and then Haida will begin the process. They were just not quite sure if I would need to go to Hong Kong since my work permit is a non-teaching Alien Work Permit, not the Foreign Expert Certificate. Either way, they are both Z types. I just needed some clarification. Now, if the process is done locally at the Hangzhou PSB, do I need to do a medical exam? When my old company I was with for over two years renewed my work permit last year, I didn't need a medical exam. If so, I can go ahead and go get the medical if it's going to required.
