Invitation letter for L type visa

For a first-time visitor as a tourist to PRC, do I need to get an invitation letter to submit along with my application in order to get tourist L type?
If so, what if I don't know anyone in PRC to issue me an invitation letter?

Kevin, the invitation letter is not necessary, if you can provide the round trip air tickets and ho0tel booking record, there is no need to find an invitation letter even though it’s the first time you apply for it.
