About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Connecting Flight? can I use the 72 hour visa free transit?

Hello, I am flying JFK-PEK, staying for less than three days, and then going to Japan before flying non-stop back to JFK a week later.

On my way to PEK, I have a connection at Narita, but am not actually entering Japan or leaving the airport. Just changing planes. PEK will be my first port of entry after leaving JFK.

Will this be a problem?

Jonathan, if you won't have an immigration stamp of Japan when connecting flight in Narita and the stopover there does not show on your flight ticket, it's possible that you can still use the 72h free transit policy, but you need to confirm this with your airline.

In your case, you are not meet the requirement, since your flights is from Japan to Beijing and then beijing to Japan. The last country before China cannot same as your next destination after China. In your case, It will treat as Japan-CHINA-JAPAN so you are not "Transferring". If you want to enjoy the 72-hour free policy, it must be like USA direct to China then Japan, this is indicated as "Transferring"
