About:China Visa

I am traveling from the US for cruise that starts in Shanghai but I am traveling to Tawian stopover

For 2 days, then to Beijing for 3 days and taking the train to Shanghai to arrive the day before the cruise from Shanghai. Can I apply for the 144 hours free visa? If so, can I apply upon arrival in Beijing?

Ruth, you cannot apply for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai if you travel like that because you will go to Shanghai from Beijing.
Considering your situation, you need to apply for a tourist L type for your stopover in Beijing and Shanghai.
Or you can apply for a transit G type if you will go to a third country or region instead of Taiwan after stopover in Beijing and Shanghai.
