Getting a work visa in PRC

Hi can anyone give me advice please.
Can I get a year long entry permit whilst I am living and working in China.
I had to go to HK every month or so with my old entry permit.
A work mate told me that the Chinese authorities could take my passport for a couple off months and stop me leaving the country whilst they sorted it out.
Regards
Tom

Tom, you can get a work Z type in PRC if you have found a company to employ you. You can change your current entry permit to a work permit at the exit and entry administration of the local PSB.
And what you workmate said is true. Sometimes, your passport may be taken for few months for the relevant procedures. If you want to travel to HK during that time, you can ask the exit and entry administration of the local PSB to issue a certificate. In this case, maybe you can enter HK.
