I want to go to Nanjing by a train. How can I pick a train to Nanjing? Is there a metro from PVG to Main Railway Station? Do I have to book a ticket early or can I buy at the station?

Well, according to your arrival time, I'm afraid that you cannot catch the bullet train. Thus you need to take the normal-speed train from the Main Railway Station. The train schedules after 21:00 are 21:06, 21:10, 21:32, 21:44, 21:46, 22:08, 22:15, 22:20, 22:50, 23:13, 23:22, 23:36, 23:42 and 23:48. The trip takes around 4 hours on the way. Soft sleeper costs CNY146.5, hard sleeper costs CNY100.5 and hard seat costs CNY46.5.

From PVG, you don't need to take the metro. Just take airport shuttle bus line 5 to get to the Main Railway Station directly. The service hours will until 23:00. So you can catch it. Generally speaking, it takes around 80 mins on the way.
