Passport expiring January 2017

Hi, I am from Indonesia, live in China right now accompanying my husband for his business who is on Z visa , my chinese visa expired on end of June 2016, but I intend to go to US for a month. I'm planning to extend my visa right now (May) however, by the time I return to PRC, my passport validity is less than 6 months. Will there be a problem when entry? Should I renew my passport first before I apply the chinese visa?

May, you hold S1 type, right? If yes and when you extend your residence permit, the extended duration cannot be more than the validity of your passport, and currently, you can only extend your residence permit for 6 or 7 months at most.
So if you want to extend your residence for a year, you should first renew your passport.
