About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

When confirming with Delta Airlines regarding "72 and/or 144 hour free transit"...

they do not have either of these showing in their system. I have been told I have to have a regular China visa for ANY visit to Shanghai, unless I am simply connecting to another flight at PVG airport. How is this possible when I read about these free transits on various websites? I did check with the China government website and they show the 72-hour instance but not the 144-hour one. I'm totally confused here! Can anyone shred any light on this? If my airline doesn't recognize these events, they wouldn't allow me to board the flight departing the USA enroute to Shanghai without possession of a regular China entry permit....this is crazy!

I'm sure that the 144-hour free transit policy has already been carried out in Shanghai, but it's right that you should hold an onward ticket to the next destination, which should be different from the country you are in before arriving in Shanghai.

If you qualify but your airline doesn't allow you to board the flight, you can tell them to check this in the TIMATIC data system.
