About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour transit visa as stopover on outbound and inbound to Europe

Hi I am an Australian citizen planning a return trip from Sydney to Paris. Due to long layovers with many of the flights I would like to break up the trip with a stay in Beijing on the way out and Shanghai on the way back.

The outward leg would be Sydney-Guangzhou (change planes 2.5hr layover) - Beijing, where I will stay for 2 days.
The following flight will be Beijing-Amsterdam (change planes 1.5hr layover) - Paris.

After 1mth in Europe the return leg will be Paris-Guangzhou(change planes 3hr layover)- Shanghai
where I will stay for 1 day.
The following flight will be Shanghai-Guangzhou (change planes 2hr layover) - Sydney.

Could someone please advise whether any of the planned stopovers in Beijing or Shanghai will qualify for the 72hr free transit? Thanks

Sorry but it´s not allowed to have 2 stops in chinese cities, when you use the 72h TWOV.

Both routes are not qualified for the 72h TWOV.

If you travel like that, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit for both legs of your trip because your transit time in PRC is less than 24 hours. In this case, you don’t need to apply for full entry permit either.

Thanks Thomas for your advice.

The other option I could consider without applying for full Chinese entry permit would be:

Sydney - Beijing (20hr layover). The following flight will be Beijing-Paris.

After 1mth in Europe the return leg will be Paris-Shanghai (14hr layover). The following flight will be Shanghai- Sydney.

Could you advise whether this qualifies for 72 hr free transit so that I can leave the airport and sightsee during the day before catching night flights. Won't have as much time as previous stopover options but hopefully do not need full entry permit.
Thanks

Thanks for your response Tracy.

So what happens at the airport?
Do I need to get stamped or fill out any paperwork for me to exit for the day and return for my night flights?

Ricky, after getting off from the plane, you should go to the airport immigration office to apply for a temporary stay permit (it is free of charge) and you will get a stamp on your passport. After that, you can leave the airport for the day and then return for your night flights.
