About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Many transits

For USA citizen. If I buy a ticket on China eastern airlines from USA to Thailand with the route SFO- Shanghai pudong (3hr transit)-Kunming (3hr transit)-Thailand, Will I need a China visa?

As you total transit time in PRC is less than 24 hours, you qualify for the 24 hour direct transit. Thus, no entry permit is required.

I emailed the China consulate in SF and they said I need it.
