confusion on transit in china

We are cruising to japan and the ship docks in Shanghai where we are flying directly home to canada but have conflicting advice on whether we need a visa to go from ship to airport. We have been told we do not qualify for a transit G type but must pay for a proper visitors entry permit which is very expensive just to go from ship to airport. Can you please clarify this for us(the cost is $200 per person)

Hi J. Mayer! If you go from Japan to Shanghai and then back your home, you can enjoy the 144-hour free transit policy in Shanghai if you don't go to other Chinese cities outside of Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang and your layover period is not more than six days. And you should make sure the last stop before you entering Shanghai is different from the next stop you will leave for.

By the way, if you need to apply for an entry permit, the fee should be CAD 110 instead of 200 in my impression.
