Q2 visa for wife

Hello, can my grandmother (Chinese national) write an invitation for my wife (both of us are US nationals) so that she can obtain a Q2 type (as her granddaughter-in-law)? Will the embassy request any documents other than a valid US marriage certificate for this purpose? Or should my wife just apply for an L type and say that our address while in China will be my grandmother's place of residence? Thanks.

John, your grandmother can write an invitation letter to both of you. You can use this letter to apply for either an L type or Q type, according to your intended stay length. If you want to stay longer for two or three months, you should apply for a Q2 type. If you don't want to stay for that long, an L type will suffice.

To apply for the Q2 type, you may need to show the relationship certificate between your grandmother and you couple.

To apply for the L type, you just need to show your passports, application forms, photos, and the invitation letter.

What is the relationship certificate? I only have the US marriage certificate. How do I certify that my grandmother and my wife are now related through me? Is there a specific kind of certificate that the Chinese consulate requires?

The relationship certificate is used to prove the relationship between your grandmother and both of you. The marriage certificate can certify that your grandmother and your wife are now related through you. As for the relationship between your grandmother and you, your grandmother can ask for a Certificate of Relationship from the local PSB.
