Sid, your passport doesn't have to be valid for at least 6 months when you visit Hong Kong. If you are US citizen, you don't need the entry permit for HK as long as the stay is not more than 90 days. If you fly from HK to Guangzhou and fly out to a third country or region, you can possibly enjoy the 72-hour free transit. If you are not eligible for that, you need to get an entry permit for Guangzhou.

Thank you. You have put my mind somewhat at ease. Will I need the new passport if I want to get a tourist visa to stay one week in Guangzhou. 2. What if I take the train? Is a 72 hour free pass available.

Dear, if you want to apply for a tourist L type to Guangzhou, you should renew your passport first.
If you take a train travel, the 72 hour free transit is not available because the 72 hour policy is only applicable for those who travel by air.
