About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Vancouver-(HKG)-Xiamen, Xiamen-(HKG)-Bangkok

I found a flight to Bangkok from Canada via Xiamen. But both on the way to Xiamen and on the way back there is a plane change in Hong Kong. Would this count as Canada-Xiamen-Third Country or is this itinerary not OK for 72 hour visa free because there are stops in Hong Kong before and after Xiamen?

Peter, if you fly like this: Vancouver-(HKG)-Xiamen, Xiamen-(HKG)-Bangkok, I’m afraid you cannot enjoy the free transit in Xiamen because after stopping in Xiamen, you fly back to HK and then fly to Bangkok. So you should apply for a tourist L type in advance or you can apply for a 3-day VOA in Xiamen.

Thank you Francis. I have been searching the web for the 3 day special economic zone VOA for Xiamen but can't find a lot of information. Do you know where I could find more information about this?

You can find the relevant information on this website. You can find it below this page named as “Visa on Arrival (Issued at Entry Ports)”. There is such a sentence: “There is also provision for a short stay VOA for some nationalities for persons who only want to visit a Special Economic Zone such as Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Xiamen or Shantou.”
