About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US citizens, flights GRR>MSP>NRT> PVG >DTW>GRR

Can we use the 144 hr Visa-free travel? Does the short layover in Japan before arrival enable us to qualify the direct return flight to the US as "third country"?

Will, if you go through the immigration check at NRT airport and get a stamp on your passport, you will qualify for the 144-hour free transit policy.
