About:Chinese Embassy in South Africa

One night layover in Shanghai. Do I need a visa if I want to leave the airport?

I am traveling from Chicago to Japan via Shanghai using a SA passport. The layover is about 10 hours and I would like to explore. Do I need to apply for an entry permit?

No, you don't need it, you are eligible for the free transit policy.

Response from the Chines Consulate in Chicago is at odds with your resposne: "You should apply for a China visa before enter China even you just stay in shanghai airport."
