About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Two 20+ hr Layovers

I have a flight from Canada to Hanoi. There are two 20 hour layovers in Shanghai and Kunming. I was hoping that the total of 40 hours would allow me to use one 72 hour transit visa. Will this not work? Will I still be able to use it for one of my stops and remain in the airport for the other?

Paul, you cannot use the 72 hour free transit because you are only allowed to transit in one Chinese city if you want to enjoy the 72 hour free transit.
In regard of your situation, you need to apply for a transit G type or tourist L type in advance for your two transits in PRC.

oh no... can I still use it in one of the stops? So use it in Shanghai and then just spend my layover in Kunming's airport? It's a bit of a last minute plan, and I'm heading over tomorrow (I'd assume the type G/L type can't be approved before then!)
