I'm going to China for vacation for a few months. Do most people understand English?

Oh, most of young people can make daily conversation in English. But for the middle-aged and old people, most of them still can not understand English. So, if you want to ask directions or something, you'd better turn to the young people around.

Unfortunately, very few people, even at 2014 can understand or speak English, mainly in shopping malls in big cities... although there are many private schools teaching English, the percentage is below 3%... In Shanghai for instance, with almost a million foreigners, the general average is much higher compared to country's average, the percentage is still very low...

No. only a certain mount speak English it is good to speak just enough Chinese to get around and ask quick questions. Better get learning!!!!
