About:China Private Visit Visa

S2 or L visa

my daughter is studying at university in China on X1 type for an academic year and my husband, myself and son would like to meet up with her - which type should we apply for ? Do we need to book on a tour or can we travel with her/ What is the exact format for a letter of invitation if my daughter provides it ??

Actually, you can apply for either S2 type or L type. I think you’d better apply for L type because it’s easy to get and the required documents are more simple.
As for the invitation letter, there is no exact format, but you can find a sample in this website.
