About:China Student Visa

My student x1 visa was given for 2 years but I left 1 year earlier and did not cancel my it.

Can I come back on the same X1 since its multiple entries and expires in August, 2016?

Dilya, you can possibly enter PRC with the same X1 type if your previous school didn’t inform the exit and entry administration of the local PSB to cancel your residence permit.
But if possible, you'd better apply for an entry permit in advance to play safe.

If you go there for sightseeing purpose, you should apply for a tourist L type. You should first prepare the required materials containing your passport and copy of its data page, the completed application form affixed with a recently-taken passport-sized color photo, round trip air tickets and hotel reservation, as well as other documents the embassy considers necessary.
And then hand in your application to the embassy of PRC to apply for it.
