Resigning from company currently sponsoring work visa but need to stay in China!

Hi,

I am leaving my current company who sponsor my work Z type here in PRC. My wife is a foreigner who works here in Shanghai also, so I need to stay in PRC while I figure out my next career move. Can I apply for an S1 type before my work Z type gets cancelled on my last day of employment?
