Visa for China - traveling for academic purposes under the Erasmus charter

Dear Sirs
I am traveling as an 'exchange academic' under an Erasmus agreement that my university has with a corresponding Chinese university. I guess I need to obtain an 'F' type. Is this right?

If yes, then can I use a scanned invitation letter from the Chinese University that is inviting me? or do i need the original one to be sent via post?
Further, do I also need to purchase my tickets and hotel accommodation in advance and come with relevant documents to the embassy for an entry permit?

Last, I guess I should go to the embassy for application without the need to book an appointment first? Right? I would also appreciate if you can inform me on how many days does it take for an entry permit to be issued?
Many thanks in advance
Elias

Hi Elias!
First, the scanned invitation letter is ok. The university doesn't have to send it to you via post, but you should be clear that the embassy reserves the right to ask for the original copy of this letter.
Second, based on your description, I think you should apply for an F or X type. Round-trip tickets and hotel accommodation proofs are not required for submission.
Last, you can go to the embassy directly during the working hours. No appointment is required. It usually takes four working days for the processing.
