Hi, I'm Italian. I'm coming to China on vacation and planning to go by rail from Beijing to Pingyao and from Pingyao to Xian. I was about to buy the tickets, but to choose the most suitable timetable for us, I would like to understand how long in advance we have to arrive at the railway stations, in case there are security controls like in an airport, if there are indication in English inside the stations.Thanks and best regardsMicol Metalli

Do as you mentioned, there will be security check involved, also, the paper ticket collection will take you sometimes as well especially if there are many people waiting in line. If you need to make the collection first before boarding, arrive there about 90min in advance would be better. If you have the paper copy in hand already, maybe 40min would be enough to go through the security and find your waiting room.
