About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Canadian living in Taiwan

Hi, I want to visit a friend in Guangzhou. I was wondering is it possible to buy a flight to HK, check into immigration and then purchase a flight to Guangzhou from HK (same day I land) and then fly directly back to Taiwan? (The trip would be under 72 hours). Or would that not be okay because of my short time spent in HK ?
Thank you!
