About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

24 Hour Visa-Free transit. Stops in Shanghai and Chengdu

Hello, I am an American Citizen with a passport and I will be traveling to Thailand. On my way to Thailand, I stop at Shanghai and have a 1 hour and 30 min layover, then I fly to Chengdu and have a 18 hour and 30 min layover until I fly to Thailand. Would I be able to apply for the 24 hour direct transit?

Thank you!
What documents would I need to have? what if I don't have a confirmed hotel?

You need to take your passport, the confirmed air tickets, and visa for the next destination (if required). It's ok if you don't have a confirmed hotel booking.

what if my airline says I need a visa? should I print out some type of document, or will I just have to obey?

If the airline insists that you need it, then you have to apply for a visa. Otherwise, it may not allow you to board onto the plane.
