working permit and work Z visa

hi I’m waiting for my application for permit to be approved ..its now been two weeks .my question is
do i need to go back to the uk my passport is uk to get new papers for starting the new working Z type the permit? as it has to come from the embassy of china uk ...or can I do it from here in PRC or even hk ? I’m living here on a valid business M type trying to change it to.. working Z type and permit
