Confusion re: entries

Hello,
I am an American citizen planning on flying NYC to Shanghai, then flying from Shanghai to Hong Kong, and back to NYC from Hong Kong. Do I need a dual-entry visa to enter the mainland and also HK, or just single-entry and not necessary to have an entry permit for entry from Shanghai to HK? Any help much appreciated, thank you!

To clarify, this is for tourism purposes. Thanks!

Dear, a single entry is enough for you because you don't need the entry permit to enter Hong Kong. What's more, if you only visit Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces for no more than 144 hours, you don't even need the single entry! The 144-hour free transit policy has been adopted there.

Thanks, Mary! Very helpful. So as long as I can prove my flight to Hong Kong that's within 144 hours of landing in Shanghai, I don't need any entry permit at all for this trip?

Thank you, Mary! One last Q--if I reverse my trip to go from New York--Hong Kong--Shanghai--New York, does the same rule apply? (I.e. does the 144 hour rule still apply if I am entering Shanghai from Hong Kong?)

Yes, it also applies to your travel if your trip is like that.
