About:Chinese Consulate in San Francisco

I would like to travel to Shanghai via plane. I would be there March 28 through March 31.

I am a US citizen. I have a passport. Would I also need a visa or what else would I need.

If you will fly to a third country or region rather than USA after your transit in Shanghai, you don’t need any entry permit because you qualify for the free transit.
