To clarify visa requirements

I am a university academic on sabbatical leave. I hope to visit China with my wife & daughter for tourism.
For entry permit do i have to submit air tickets? If I obtain a travel booking Would that be enough?
Do I have to obtain an invitation letter from the Chinese travel Bureau? If I obtain a booking from a Chinese Travel agency for my itinerary would that be enough?

Dear, the round trip air tickets are necessary. But if can provide the travel booking, I think it’s enough because the transportation arrangement is included in it.
An invitation letter from the Chinese travel Bureau is required even though you book a tour, and you will get an“Invitation Letter for Tourist Group” from Chinese Tourist Bureau if you book a tour.
