Transit permit - USA travelers

2 travelers with US passports will be flying through Beijing (PEK) on a flight connection from SFO to SIN. The layover is 9 hours. We would like to leave the airport for sightseeing to visit the Great Wall and Forbidden City. What do we need to do, or apply for in order to take advantage of the 24 hour transit permit and permit us to leave the airport? Can the application be done in advance so we don't waste time once we arrive in Beijing?

Lee, you don't need to do anything in advance and you can't apply for it beforehand. However, the process is very fluent. After you arrive at the airport, you just need to show your onward flight ticket and passport, then tell the officer that you want to leave the airport during the layover, and the officer will stamp a temporary stay permit on your passport. Then you can leave. It only takes a few minutes, so just relax.
