staying in guangzhou for one night

I have a colleague flying to Guangzhou from the USA and staying one night for a meeting and then flying back to the USA what options do I have with regards to the Visa as I believe this would mean he is not in transit but he is there less than 72 hours

Bree, first, he cannot enjoy the 72 hour visa free transit because after transiting in Guangzhou, he will fly back to USA. So he needs to apply for a transit G type in advance. Or he can fly to HK or Macau after stopover in Guangzhou, and then fly back to USA, in this way, he can enjoy the free transit.
