About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hour free transit from LAX to PDG to SYD (via HK)

I am an American citizen. I will be flying from LAX to Shanghai on one carrier, staying for 3 nights and then heading on to Sydney (with a change of planes in Hong Kong) on a different carrier. I should be fine under the 144 hour rule, correct?
