About:Beijing - Shanghai High Speed Train

But what would be the service charge?

Is it advisable to buy the tickets online, or go down to the station to buy the tickets!

The service fee are different, like this website, it would be USD5 or 7 for domestic routes(international trips seems different). You can decide it based on the availability. If it become limited, you need to book in advance online.
