About:China Visa Exemption

Traveling from LA through Kunming to Laos and then from Laos through Shanghai back to LA.

We have 2 overnight layovers where we will leave the airport for 12 hours and get a hotel nearby. On the way to Laos, it is in Shanghai and on the way back the overnight layover is in Kunming. What type of Visa would we need?

Jenna, you can enjoy72-hour free stay on both legs of the trip, so the transit permit is not required.

The flight from LAX involves two stops in China (PVG, KMN) so you would NOT be eligible for the visa waiver program, even though the overnight is in one of those cities. One must land in China, depart from that same city to a city OUTSIDE of the mainland to be eligible.
