About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Visa to Chengdu

My husband, my mother, and I will be flying ANA from LAX to Chengdu (Layover in Tokyo because we are using points on ANA) and planning on spending 2 days in the city, but the flight from Tokyo to Chengdu doesn't land in China until around 10pm. We would be flying out of Chengdu after spending 1 day at the panda reserve and 1 day exploring the city then fly back from Chengdu to Tokyo to spend 5 days there before heading back to LAX. Do we still qualify for the 72-Hour Free Transit?

Hilary, I’m afraid you cannot use the 72 hour free transit because after your transit in Chengdu, you fly back to Tokyo, but according to the policy, you shouldn’t fly back to Japan, but fly to a third country or region.

But we aren't staying in Tokyo leading up to Chengdu, we are just flying ANA, so we have to stop there in order to change planes. We aren't staying there, just have about a one hour layover there. Does that still mean we do not qualify?

Dear, I'm sorry, but it's the policy. You still don't qualify for the free transit even you just stop over in Tokyo for an hour.

So how is it supposed to work if I can't get a direct flight to Chengdu? How can people use the policy if the flight they have chosen does not fly direct? Do we have to have a layover in China? Should I switch airlines? Or should I just apply for an L type to cover my bases?
