About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Beijing then shanghai by train

We will be staying 3 days in beijing (less than 72 hours in beijing) then board the sleeper train to shanghai (less than 72 hours in shanghai)do i need to get a visa or will i qualify for 72 hour free transit?

Jo, you are not eligible for the 72 hour free transit. So you need to apply for an L type entry permit ahead of your journey.

What if we changed plans...instead of exiting beijing via train we will be travelling by airplane to shanghai...will we be eligible for the 72 hour free transit this time??thanks for your reply..i appreciate it

Dear, sorry, you don’t qualify for the 72 hour free transit either because the policy stipulates one can only transit in one Chinese city, but you stop in two.
