Does a same day return trip mean a round trip complete in 24 hours or complete in one calendar day?thanks

Yeah, it should be complete within 24h if referring to the AE Same-Day Return Pass.

for example, I took the express from airport to HK in the evening, then back to airport the next day am....does it count as a same day round trip??

Oh, it is not for 24h. You should use the round trip before the last train of the calendar day. So your case doesn't apply. The Round Trip Ticket is the best choice for you.
